What are Beacons and Assets?
Virtually any piece of equipment can be equipped with a BLE Beacon. That equipment will be considered an asset within the Raven web application. When you buy beacons, they are automatically linked to your Raven account. Each beacon comes with a charged battery, screws, zip ties, and adhesives for a variety of installation options. Just turn on your beacons, pair them and you’re all set to start monitoring your assets.
Installing Beacons
Before you can start using beacons, you must power them on.
- To power on your beacons, simply twist the cap counter-clockwise to remove it, then hold the white power button until you see a dim blue light. Once powered on, place the cap on top, then twist it clockwise to secure it.
- You can use BeaconSET Plus on iOS or Android to see if your beacon's Mac address is listed. This is another way to confirm that your beacon is powered on.
- Use the provided screws, zip ties, or adhesive to secure the beacon to your asset.
Note: If you want to power off your beacons, follow step 1 again, but hold the white power button until the dim blue light stops flashing. Once powered off, place the cap on top, then twist it clockwise to secure it.
Setting Up Beacons
- Before setting up your beacons, you must first create an asset to pair it to. Click “Assets” from the left side menu of the dashboard, then “Add Asset”.
- The 'Asset Details' panel will open. Enter the asset's Name. You can also define the Make, Model, Serial No., and Description if you wish, these are optional fields.
- Click the "Beacon" drop-down and select a beacon to pair with your asset (all unpaired beacons will be listed here). The beacon’s Mac address (located below the QR code) can be used to identify it.
- Click “Save Asset”.
Managing Assets
Know Where Your Assets Are
Assets must be paired with a beacon in order to be located on the map. When beacons are within range of a Raven camera, the GPS and cellular module capture the asset's position and time/date at which that detection was made, providing an update to the Raven web app every 5 minutes.
On the Assets tab, you can show or hide your assets by clicking on the check mark beside its name.
Three icons are present to the right of the asset's name, providing different information for the respective icon.
- When you hover your mouse over the triangle or circle icon, you will see the Geofence in which they were last located (if applicable).
- When you hover your mouse over the square 'r' icon, you will see the date/time they were last seen.
- When you hover your mouse over the Battery icon, you will see the beacon's last reported battery level.
| Geofence | Last Report Time | Battery Level |
When selecting an asset from the list, the Asset Details panel will open, providing additional information about that beacon including:
- Make, Model, Serial No., and Description as you've defined for the asset.
- The beacon you have paired with the asset.
- The Raven the asset last reported to.
Edit Assets
You can edit defined details or unpair a beacon by clicking "Edit Asset" from the Asset Details panel. Select "None" to have no beacon assigned or choose another beacon. Once you have finished making changes, click “Save Asset”.
Delete Assets
You can delete assets from the Asset Details section by clicking "Delete Asset". This will also unpair the assigned beacon (if applicable).
Managing Beacons
- To manage your beacons, navigate to Admin > Beacons. Here, you can see which assets your beacons are paired with.
- Click an individual beacon or “Expand All” to see more details.
- Click “Filters” to toggle between seeing visible/hidden, and all/assigned/unassigned beacons.
- Click “Hide” if you lost a beacon and don’t wish to see it anymore.
- If you find a lost beacon, you can unhide it by filtering for hidden beacons and clicking “Unhide”.
Replacing Batteries
If a beacon battery dies, they are easy to replace. CR2477 3V Lithium Batteries can be purchased from anywhere batteries are sold.
- To replace a battery, simply twist the cap counter-clockwise to remove it, gently move the foam out of the way, push the old battery out, then put a new one in it's place.
- Once replaced, ensure the foam is positioned between the battery and cap.
- Hold the white power button until you see a dim blue light. Once powered on, place the cap on top, then twist it clockwise to secure it.
- You can use BeaconSET Plus on iOS or Android to see if your beacon's Mac address is listed. This is another way to confirm that your beacon is powered on.
